  The course on Management of the Arts was introduced in 1997 by the Institute of European Studies (IEEM) and the Polytechnic Institute of Macau (IPM) and had a duration of 3 years.

The course aims at training human resources to fulfill the needs of modern cultural infrastructures that were being constructed in the city in the past 5 years. This governmental and private infrastructures includes

the Museum of Macau, the Cultural Centre (with auditoriums, the Museum of Arts, library, etc), the museums and gallery in Taipa Island, the Sacred Art Museum, the Contemporary Art Centre and the classification and renovation of several heritage sites and buildings.

Thus, this post-graduation course was designed to students who were willing to work in the fields of planning and managing various activities related to Visual Arts, Performing Arts and other arts related activities.

The objective of the course program was to impart the applicant with skills in the management of cultural activities, critical knowledge on different art expressions, a broad background in history of culture and the understanding of co-operation between artists and cultural organizations.

This was also an innovative and unique post-graduate course for Macau and also for this region. The course brought together international experts (as visiting lecturers) from the field of culture, arts and management, with students (mainly from local cultural organizations), covering in the total of around 70 people. In the past 3 years of running the course, students presented 39 projects in very diversified cultural aspects where several were accomplished successfully.

During the 3 years of running the course we had the enormous support from the European Union and the Government of Macau.

INTRODUCTION
This Post-Graduate Diploma course, certificated by the IPM - Polythecnic Institute of Macau, is directed to students who are willing to work in the fields of planning and managing of various activities related to Fine Arts or Performing Arts.

OBJECTIVES
To impart the applicant with the understanding in the broad sense of co-operation between artists and cultural organizations, developing efficient strategy in management of cultural activities and critical knowledge of different art expressions.

CONTENTS
The subjects are grouped in 4 modules: History and Theory of Cultures, History and Theory of Arts, Administration and Management of the Project and Production and Technique.

DURATION
From October to June (during post-office hours) plus an extra 3 months (to conclude the Project).

MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION
English.

COURSE WORK WEIGHTING
The evaluation is based on 50% for the final Project and 50% for the class-work (assignments, exams, teamwork, participation, etc).
Attendance is compulsory and student absences must not exceed 25%.

OBJECTIVES
The Course in the Management of the Arts provided by the Institute of European Studies of Macau is designed for student willing to become programmers of cultural and artistic activities.

The main objective of this long-term course is to supply the knowledge and the necessary skills which will enable the students to become manager-programmers in the complex area of Arts.

The applicants should hold a university degree and have experience in the areas of organization, management or co-ordination of cultural activities, mainly in the domain of the Fine Arts performing arts (music, opera, dance, theatre) and cultural heritage.

The general objectives of this course are to impart knowledge to the students about the following:

  • The need to plan and find efficient strategies in the management of artistic and cultural activities.
  • The need of co-operation between creators and those responsible for artistic and cultural organizations.

To reach these objectives the course is based upon three fundamental points:

  • To supply knowledge about the social and institutional context in the culture area and in that of the economic development.
  • To learn and develop concepts and means of programming and of cultural organizations, regarding the management of human resources, equipment and ways of accessing both regional and global information concerning cultural production.
  • To devise and practice of forms of understanding, i.e. local verses global production/exhibition.

TEACHING METHOD
The teaching method is based upon apprenticeship/development/practice; and on methodologies and processes of cultural programming as well.

The method aims at carrying out concrete projects situations to real at solving problems of cultural institutions and/or materializing projects that are already underway.

The teaching method is theory and practice, and the official language is English.

CONDITION TO APPLY
Applicants must complete an enrollment form supplied by the course/Institute of European Studies of Macau.

The main condition to apply to the course and acceptance of the acceptance of the applicants is the submission of a prototype of a cultural programme, which should take into account the following aspects:

EVALUATION SYSTEM
The Management of the Arts Course 1998/1999 final evaluation is based on 50% for the project and 50% for the information given by the lectures: assignments (5 pages in maximum), exams or work in class.

The absences should not exceed 25%.

At the end of the course students who pass will be given a Diploma (Post-Graduation) with a quantitative global classification.
