  The IP Law School

The IP Law School is a unique initiative in Asia offering a taught programme in international Intellectual Property Law and its relevance for global, European and Asian economic development and innovation policy.

The IP Law School is extremely suited for trainee lawyers, Intellectual Property professionals with an economic or policy background, and master students in Intellectual Property wishing to enhance their skills at post-academic level.

Starting from the basics of the Paris and Berne conventions, the course covers the development of Intellectual Property Law all the way to the WTO TRIPS Agreement and the WIPO Copyright treaties. Attention is also devoted to regional arrangements, such as the European Patent Convention, and other new international and national initiatives. From a policy perspective free trade agreements and bilateral investment arrangements covering Intellectual Property, as well as ongoing negotiations in the area of protection of traditional knowledge will be covered.

Classes are offered in an intensive Socratic format in the course of one week by experts in the field. The main lecturers are professors Anselm Kamperman Sanders ( Maastricht University ) and Christopher Heath (Boards of Appeal, European Patent Office). Other distinguished lecturers may be invited for specific topics (please see schedule).

This challenging programme also expects students to jointly prepare and argue several moot cases in a friendly, yet competitive atmosphere, providing a unique insight in the way in which participants from various jurisdictions approach international and domestic legal problems.

The IP Law School offers an excellent opportunity to prepare or refresh one’s knowledge before the IP Seminar and the IP Master Classes.

  The IP Law Master Classes

IP Master Classes offer the opportunity to learn from an expert in a particular sub-discipline of Intellectual Property Law. Whereas the IP Master Classes follow the same Socratic format of the IP Law School, including the opportunity to argue mock trials, they are much more topical and are taught jointly by the regular IP Law School team and other expert speakers from the IP Seminar. This means that IP Master Classes form a seamless companion programme to the annual Intellectual Property Seminar.

In all, the IP Law School, the IP Seminar and the IP Master Classes form an attractive package. You can furthermore take the entire programme at a special rate, or select a combination of modules that suit your needs.

Material will be distributed before the course, and the participants are required to prepare the case studies beforehand. The actual cases on which the case studies are based will be distributed during the course.

The mock trials will be prepared in three groups: Plaintiffs, defendants and jury. The groups will be formed on the first day, and each group should then represent the plaintiff, defendant and jury in one of the three mock trials in order to appreciate the different functions.

  The IP Law Seminar

Since 2000 the IEEM has been organizing every year a successful two-days seminar on Intellectual Property Law topics. In 2010 it will be the 11th seminar and the topic chosen is Leading IP Personalities and Institutions. A group of distinguished speakers will be invited to talk about cases that shaped the IP landscape. The papers delivered by the speakers will be made available online. Upon registration you will receive the location and a password that provides access to these materials.

Past seminars have attracted to Macau some of the best experts in the field and the papers presented there have been published in book form by Kluwer and Hart.
