EIC-Macau's Launch of Poster Design Competition for Celebration of Europe Day 2008 on 9 May

(09 May 2008)

To celebrate the Europe Day on 9 May this year, the EIC-Macau, in cooperation with the Institute of European Studies of Macau, is launching a Poster Design Competition with the theme on "Europe and Macau: Creating a Greener World Together". The theme of the Campaign is in line with the European Commission’s target to combat climate change and promote renewable energy to preserve the environment for the world as a whole. The objective of our activity is to arouse the awareness of the public to save energy and protect the environment. Even small changes in our daily behavior can help prevent greenhouse gas emissions without affecting our quality of life. Reducing the volume of greenhouse gas emissions substantially can effectively slow down the global greenhouse effect.

For the materials of the posters, we strongly encourage the participants to use recycle materials. Moreover, the theme of the posters should emphasize the importance of green environment and highlight the cooperation between Europe and Macao appropriately.

The Campaign is divided into two categories, one for teenagers and one for adults. There are altogether 8 prices for the winners and the deadline for submission is 15 July 2008.

EIC-Macau attended a "Briefing for Macao SMEs on the Investment Opportunities and Practical Issues in Distribution and Agency Service Industries of Guangdong Province" organized by the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute on 28 May 2008

(29 May 2008)

Due to its geographical location, Guangdong province is one of the areas that Macao enterprises have invested heavily in. Moreover, Guangdong is the province that has earned the most foreign currencies among all the provinces in China. Therefore, we can see that it is always one of the favorable locations in China for foreign investments. Many foreign enterprises have set up their factories, offices or franchises in Guangdong. As a result, the trade department in Guangdong province has constantly reformed measures for market access for foreign investors, providing a more favorable environment. Therefore, EIC-Macau took the chance to attend the seminar in order to update the investment environment of the Guangdong province and learn some practical aspects of doing business in the province such as application procedures for licenses, customs and duties, employment contract law etc.

A presentation entitled Briefing for Macao SMEs on the Investment Opportunities and Practical Issues in Distribution and Agency Service Industries of Guangdong province was held on 28 May at the Macao Business Support Centre. The event was co-organized by the Department of Foreign Trade and Economic Co-operation of Guangdong Province, Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute and Guangdong Board of Investment Promotion. The presentation was divided in three parts - 1. Officials from foreign trade and economic departments gave talks on their current investment environments, policies, legislations, incentives and practical issues in Guangdong province; 2. Experienced advisors in various trades in Guangdong cities gave themed talks on practical investment experiences and 3. Through interactive discussions, the SMEs raised their concerns and the key-note speakers analyzed their cases and explained the issues to them to ease their doubts and enquiries.

The presentation enabled local enterprises to have a better understanding of the latest business opportunities in Guangdong province. Through direct contact with the relevant departments, enterprises could obtain information about the distribution and agency industries, up-to-date economic data and measures in Guangdong. Over 100 guests from Guangdong Province and Macao SAR government, trade associations and business fields (including banking, accountancy, automobile distribution, logistics, information technology and wine industries) attended the briefing session, and held discussion and analysis on hot investment topics such as Enterprise Income Tax Law and new Employment Contract Law. After the presentation, EIC-Macau was able to get some contacts with the government officials and representatives from the industries in Guangdong for further reference and referrals.
